A Study on Effects of Chemotherapy with Various Chemotherapeutic Agents on Experimental Metastasis of Cancer


Abstract
It has been emphasized by many authors that the cause of metastasis and regrowth of tumor is to be attributed to the dissemination of liberated cells throughout the body.
As one of our serial studies or "Cancer Surgery and its Adjuvant Chemotherapy", the author undertook an experimentation with strains of Ehrlich Ascites Cancer and AH 7974 Ascites Hepatoma, in order to-investigate, possible effects of cancer chemotherapy on metastasis.
The results thus obtained were summarized as follows:
1. When Ehrlich Ascites Cancer was inoculated to mice by hematogenous route througli its tail vein, lung metastasis was noted in about 77.5% of 40 mice as [controls, whereas only 44.3% of 122 mice treated with chemotherapeutic agents showed metastatic lesions in the lungs, grossly and microscopically. Apparently, chemotherapy was thought to have brought about such a remarkable decline of metastasis as compared with that of controls.
2) As for chemotherapeutic agents used, after hematogenous dissemination of cancer, nitrogen mustard N-oxide was found to be most effective for the group of mice which chemotherapy was started immediately after injection of cancer ascites into tail vein. On the other hand, 5-Fluorouracil was proved to be of considerable effiicacy to the mice with growth of locally established tumor.
3) In constrast to the control group of rats in which the proximal end of tails was only cut away in the course of time after transplantation of AH 7974 hepatoma thereinto, a sharp difference was shown in the group of tail resection combined with chemotherapy. Again, it was revealed that lymphatic metastasis could be controlled by chemotherapy, if combined with resection at an appropriate time.
4) So far as lymphogenous metastasis is concerned, there was noted no marked difference in the results between the groups ¢¥treated with various chemotherapeutic agents such as alkylating agents, antimetabolites as well as antibiotics.
